HKSB - The Hong Kong Society for the Blind

In order to enhance the English standard of visually impaired masseurs so as to strengthen their communication skills with foreign customers and to broaden the clientele base, the Information Accessibility Centre of the Hong Kong Society for the Blind has compiled the first book on ‘Practical English for Massage’ in Hong Kong.

This book is designed as a teaching aid for Chinese massage therapists and massage training programme trainees in Hong Kong, Mainland China and around the world, and can be used as a tool for daily reference. It has been developed in consultation with the participants of the English for Practical Massage Course held in June and July 2009, and is based on the views of the trainees. The visually impaired were fully involved in the planning, co-ordination, curriculum development, text translation and proof-reading of the book. The participation of the visually impaired in the production of this book gives it a special significance.

In addition, during the production of the VCDs, we have inserted Chinese translations after each English conversation and strings of English words in the glossary for those members who do not understand Braille or cannot read Putonghua.

This book is available in three editions:

I. The Traditional Chinese version is accompanied by a CD-ROM with recorded English conversation and Cantonese translation;
II. The Simplified Chinese version is accompanied by a CD-ROM with audio recordings of English conversation and Putonghua translation;
III. The Cantonese Braille version is accompanied by a CD-ROM with recorded English conversation and Cantonese translation.

The retail price of the plain text version of the book ‘Practical English for Massage’ is $68. To encourage visually impaired masseurs and massage trainees to improve their English communication skills, members can purchase the book at the same price of HK$45 for both the regular and Braille versions.
